Softball Drops Pair In Home-Openers

The Wells College softball team opened its 2019 season with a home doubleheader against Houghton College on Thursday, March 21. Houghton took the first game 14-1 and won the second game 21-3.

The Express will be back in action Sunday, March 24 against SUNY Canton beginning at 2 p.m. Previously scheduled road games at SUNY Delhi on Saturday have been postponed due to an inclement weather forecast.

HOUGHTON 14, WELLS 1 (5 inn.)

The Highlanders scored multiple runs in all five innings and racked up 14 hits.

Wells scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Lizzie Monnat laced a single up the middle to start the inning. A pair of infield grounders moved Monnat to third base and she scored on an error. Jess Conover pitched and took the loss with two strikeouts.

HOUGHTON 21, WELLS 3 (5 inn.)

The Highlanders built a 9-0 lead but Wells answered with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Jess Conover singled and Naomi Kubo doubled. Lizzie Monnat delivered a two-run single to right field and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Jenna Devora had an RBI single to center to bring in Monnat and Wells pulled within 9-3.

Houghton added eight runs in the fourth to retake control of the game.

Conover had two hits in the game and pitched the final two innings after coming in relief of Naomi Kubo during the top of the fourth.
