Wells Softball Drops Doubleheader To Penn College

The Wells College softball team lost a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference games in a Monday night doubleheader against Penn College on April 22, 2019 at the Wells Turf Field. The Wildcats got a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to take the first game 11-7 in extra innings, and Penn College won the second game 11-2 in six innings.

Wells is scheduled to play a Friday, Apirl 26 doubleheader at Morrisville State with games beginning at 3 and 5 p.m.

Penn College 11, Wells 7 (8 innings)

An exciting back-and-forth game went to Penn College in extra innings. Wells scored four times in the bottom of the third to take the lead. The Express got their runs on two hits and a walk and took advantage of three Penn College errors. Naomi Kubo and Lizzie Monnat had RBI singles and Jenna Devora had a sac fly to bring home Carley Ryan.

Penn College scored twice in the fourth and added five unearned runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-4, but Wells scored three in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 7-7. Autumn McLain had an RBI single and Tori Miller had a two-run double to right center with two outs to score McLain and Devora.

It was 7-7 in the top of the eighth when Penn College loaded the bases with two outs, and Kylie Shreiner homered to center field. Wells was set down in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Devora had two hits for Wells. Carley Ryan and Tori Miller doubled. It was the first extra-base hit of Miller's career.

Penn College 11, Wells 2 (6 innings)

Wells scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third. Carley Ryan led off with a walk and Lizzie Monnat reached on an infield error. Jenna Devora bounced into a ground out to score Ryan, and another infield grounder brought home Monnat. Gabby Sawyer doubled in the second and Carley Ryan singled in the fifth for the Wells hits.
