WELLS COLLEGE ADDS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL; MIKE O'BRIEN NAMED HEAD COACH

AURORA, N.Y. - Wells College is pleased to announce that women's basketball has been added as a varsity sport for the 2010-2011 season and Mike O'Brien has been hired as the head coach at Wells. The Express will begin play in the North Eastern Athletic Conference in 2010-2011 with the winner of the post-season conference tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. O'Brien will spend this season recruiting and preparing the Express for their debut in the fall of 2010.

O'Brien spent last season as the assistant coach at Mohawk Valley Community College helping guide the Hawks to a 28-3 record, the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship, and a spot in the NJCAA Region III championship game. Prior to MVCC, O'Brien was an assistant at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY reaching the conference tournament both years during his tenure. Overall,  O'Brien has over ten years experience coaching at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels accumulating an overall head coaching record of 121-50.  

Basketball becomes the eighth women's varsity team at Wells joining soccer, cross country, field hockey, swimming, lacrosse, softball, and tennis. Wells sponsor five male sports in soccer, cross country, swimming, basketball, and lacrosse while also sponsoring mixed golf.
