SPARTANS ROLL PAST EXPRESS AT MAX ZIEL CLASSIC

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team fell 84-58 to the D'Youville College Spartans in the consolation game of the 2011 Max Ziel Basketball Tournament at Oswego State University Saturday afternoon in Oswego. Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kappaa, Hawaii) paced the Express with 19 points, earning a spot on the Max Ziel All-Tournament team after averaging 14.5 points per game during the two day tournament. The loss drops the Express to 1-2 on the year while D'Youville improves to 1-2 on the season.

Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) also had an impressive day for the Express finishing with 14 points and a game high 17 rebounds to go along with four assist, while teammate Kelli Furney (Camden, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Spartans were led by All-Tournament selection Kaitlyn Roland who finished with a game high 31 points. Hannah Norton added 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Shannon Dougherty chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds to round out the highlights for D'Youville.

The Express scored the game's first two points but D'Youville responded with a 13-0 run to open an 11-point. Wells climbed back to within five points (13-8) with a 6-0 run of their own but the Spartans rattled off another run as they would enter halftime with a 48-25 lead. Roland was impressive for the Spartans scoring 21 of her 31 points in the half.

The second half would be closely contested with the Spartans outscoring the Express 36-33 but, the first half deficit would prove to be too much for the Express to overcome as the Spartans cruised to their first win of the season.

The Express shot 28 percent from the floor and were impressive from the line hitting on 21 of 28 free throws. D'Youville shot 45 percent from the floor and held a clear advantage on the board 57-46.

The Express return to action next when they welcome Utica College to campus on Nov. 29 with the tip-off set for 7 p.m.
