PETERSON'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE PROPELLS EXPRESS PAST COBLESKILL

AURORA, N.Y.Jordan Peterson (Hamilton, N.Y.) finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds and the Wells College women's basketball team held off a late rally by SUNY Cobleskill to top the Fighting Tigers 52-40 on Saturday afternoon in Aurora. With the victory the Express improve to 8-15 (6-9 NEAC) while the Fighting Tigers fall to 11-11 (8-7 NEAC).

 

Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) added 18 points, including 10-13 from the free throw line, while also adding six rebounds to round out the top scorers for Wells.

 

Chelcy Moore (Albany, N.Y.) finished with a team high 13 points and added six rebounds while teammate Heidi Anderson (Canajoharie, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and five rebounds for Cobleskill.

 

The Express never trailed in this one, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead seven minutes into play. Wells continued to play a tough defense, holding the Fighting Tigers to just ten points through the first 17 minutes of play while pushing their lead to 12 (22-10) before closing the half with a 25-16 lead.

 

Wells extended their lead to 13 points (37-24) early in the second half but jumpers by Tracee Scheibel (Vernon, N.Y.) and Victoria Carter (Monticello, N.Y.) along with seven points by Moore helped the Fighting Tigers cut the lead to three (40-37) with 4:08 to play.

 

The Express responded, Peterson and Roser each hit two free-throws and Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) nailed an open jumper to spark Wells to a 12-0 run and 52-37 lead. Wells was also equal to the task on the defensive end, holding the Fighting Tigers scoreless until a 3-pointer by Anderson with 12 seconds left snapped the Fighting Tigers four minute drought.

 

Both teams struggled from the floor. Cobleskill shot 28 percent including 3-15 from long range. Wells finished 27.1 percent from the field and 0-3 from behind the arc but took advantage from the free throw line finishing 20-28 on the afternoon.

 

The Express return to action tomorrow in their final regular season home game against the SUNY IT Wildcats at 4 p.m. in Aurora.
