Women’s Basketball Felled By Elmira, 70-47

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite junior Ashley Roser's (Taberg, N.Y.) second consecutive 20 point game, the Wells College women's basketball team posted their second straight loss, a 70-47 defeat, at the hands of Elmira College Sunday afternoon at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-2 early in the regular season while the Soaring Eagles collect their first victory (1-2) following the non-conference tilt.

Despite handing over a 10-2 lead within the game's first three minutes, the Express were able to rally and knot the score at 10 apiece with 14:27 remaining in the first. Following an Alex Balara three point basket to create an eight point lead, the Express scored eight unanswered points via three Roser layups and a Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) jumper. Converting their next five foul shots, however, were the Soaring Eagles – the visiting team was able to recapture their lead with 12:03 remaining in the first stanza following a Karli Pochkar free throw.

Despite the early back-and-forth action, the Express were once again able to tie the game but were unable to establish a lead at any point in the contest. Trailing by three with 9:10 remaining in the first half, Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) was fouled on a successful layup with 8:41 remaining in the first half. She converted her foul shot to tie the score, but the Soaring Eagles recaptured a 10 point lead before the half, including a Sam Strzepek three point attempt with time ticking away in the half.

The Express did not get closer than 12 points in the remainder of the game as Elmira scored 19 second half points off of turnovers, including 10 second chance opportunities in the second half. With 3:31 remaining in regulation, the Soaring Eagles scored the game's final eight points to create a 23 point margin of defeat for the Express.

Cumulatively, Roser led the way with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She was 9-for-12 in field goals and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. Her four blocks led the team while Achzet posted a team-best four steals. Hernandez also contributed three steals herself. The Express were 0-for-4 from three point range.

For the Soaring Eagles, Liz Forrest led the team with 16 total points by burying 4-of-6 field goals and her lone three point basket. Alex Balara was on fire from beyond the arc, pouring in three successful three point baskets to conclude the afternoon with a 3-for-5 mark in that category. Meghan Loya and Forrest each posted six boards as the Express were out-rebounded by a 39-to-28 margin.

The Express return to action this Wednesday, Nov. 28 as they host the Saxons of Alfred University in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
