Women’s Basketball Slowed By Keuka, 73-56

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Despite 16 points by junior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.), the Wells College women's basketball team posted a 73-56 loss to the Storm of Keuka College Wednesday evening at the Weed Arts Center. With the loss, the Express fall to 5-9 overall on the season and to 4-2 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Storm improve to 9-2 overall on the year and to 6-1 within league play.

The Express captured their only lead of the game with 4:05 remaining in the first half as Roser converted a free throw to grant the visitors a 23-22 lead. Up until that point, the Express were unable to capture the lead and at one point were trailing by seven points two separate times. Later in the half with the score set at 27-25 in favor of the host Storm, a Brittany Hadley foul sent Roser to the line with 2:37 remaining in the first half. Roser buried both free throws to knot the score at 27 apiece.

However, for the remainder of the opening stanza, the Express were only able to muster two foul shots and a layup, allowing the Storm to enter the locker room at halftime with a three point lead. Through the first 20 minutes, Roser led the way with 14 points to her credit while also scooping up a team-best nine boards. She was also able to post three blocks through the first half to lead the team in that category.

The Storm ramped up their offensive output in the second half, outscoring the Express by a 40-26 margin in the closing half. From the field, the Storm converted 50% of their baskets while the Express were limited to a 36.1% success rate from the field. Additionally, Wells was held scoreless from the perimeter (0-for-4) while the Storm utilized eight free throws (8-for-11) and two three point baskets (2-for-6) to put the game out of reach for the Express.

Cumulatively on the game, Roser was able to post 16 points to lead the Express in that category. Her 12 rebounds led the team while her five field goals and two assists tied for the team lead in each category. Freshman Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii) ranked second with 10 points while freshman Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) posted nine points in the contest.

For the Storm, Jessica Bandrowski and Amanda Kubitz each posted 15 point games for Keuka. Bandrowski joined Erica Pendrak with five assists and three steals, while Casey Chamberlain also posted three takeaways. Kubitz, in only 20 minutes of play, tied for the team lead with eight boards while also blasting a team-best two three point baskets.

Keuka holds the all-time series lead against the Express, collecting victories in all five contests.

The Express return to action Saturday, Jan. 19 as they face-off against the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
