Women’s Basketball Downed By SUNYIT, 77-59

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team posted a 77-59 loss to the Wildcats of SUNYIT Sunday afternoon at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the loss, the Express snap a four game winning streak and fall to 9-10 overall on the year. The Wildcats improve to 9-6 overall and to 7-2 against NEAC opponents.

Junior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) posted her 53rd career double-double with a 20 point game alongside a team-best 15 boards. In addition, freshman Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) posted 15 total points while sophomore Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii) led the way with five assists to her credit.

In the first half, the Express were able to keep the surging Wildcats at arm's length, not letting their opponent get beyond an eight point lead. In the first half alone, the lead changed nine different times with the score evened up only four times. Carrying a 40-33 lead into the locker room at halftime were the Wildcats, who utilized 24 points in the pain in addition to 12 points off of Express turnovers.

With 13:01 remaining in the second half, junior Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) converted 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to 53-46, but the Express were never within seven points for the remainder of the game. The Wildcats continued to punish the Express in the paint, posting 20 points in the paint in the second half alone. Additionally, Wells turnovers cost them nine SUNYIT points.

Abbey Hanahan recorded 18 total points for the Wildcats, who used only one three-point basket to silence the Express at home for the first time since Dec. 4, 2012 against Nazareth College. Lyndsey Brognano poured home 16 points, converting 6-of-8 free throws and burying 5-of-12 shots from the field for SUNYIT. As a team, they shot 42.1% from the field (32-of-76).

The Express return to action Saturday, Feb. 2 as they host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a 2:00 p.m. home contest at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing.
