Halftime Lead Slips Away In 66-57 Loss To Brockport St.

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Despite a 32-29 lead at halftime, the Wells College women's basketball team dropped a 66-57 contest to The College at Brockport Friday evening at the Vlogianitis Gymnasium. Wells (0-1) drops their first contest of the season while Brockport is boosted to 1-0 on the year.

Senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) led Wells with 25 total points and 13 rebounds, recording her 70th career double-double in this evening's loss to Brockport. Classmate Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) set a career-high with 10 points while senior Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) struck for eight rebounds apiece.

Wells came out of the gate strong, opening up a game-high six point lead within the game's first 3:45. After sophomore Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) tied the game at two apiece following two foul shot conversions, Wells scored eight of the game's next 10 points as Roser and Ryan each sank jumpers while Hernandez accounted for four of those points to capture an early advantage.

The Express were able to keep the host Golden Eagles at arm's length following a tied score of 17-17 near the midpoint of the stanza. Wells only trailed in the game's opening two points and never relinquished the lead in the first 20 minutes of action.

A Hernandez layup at only 1:15 into the second half opened up a five point lead for the Express, but Brockport utilized a Hannalee Fordyce layup and a Codi Battaglia three-point basket to jumpstart their offense, tying the game at 36 apiece with 16:58 left in regulation time. The Wells defense allowed the hosts to score the game's next five points, with the exclamation point on the Brockport run coming via a three-point basket by Alexandra Marshall at 15:42 of the second half.

Wells rallied after the Brockport surge, eventually taking a two point lead after a Ryan layup with 12:13 remaining. However, the game's decisive blow came from freshman Faith Welch as her three-point basket with 11:48 remaining in regulation time granted Brockport the lead for good. The stunned Express did not score again until 7:52 as a Roser three-pointer cut the deficit to three, but their scoring lapse of greater than four minutes doomed any further attempts at a comeback.

Four players racked up 10 points for Brockport, led by Bree Fortney's 15 points after shooting 50% (6-for-12) from the floor in the contest. Marshall narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine assists. Welch, in her first collegiate contest, score 13 points and added seven assists in the game.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Nov. 15 as they face-off against the Raptors of Bard College in a 2:00 p.m. neutral site game at the Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport, N.Y.
