Women’s Basketball Overwhelmed By Alfred, 88-58

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team posted an 88-58 loss to the Saxons of Alfred University Tuesday evening at the McLane Center. With the loss, Wells falls to 1-2 in their non-conference schedule to open the season. The Saxons collect their first victory of the year (1-2) with the win.

Wells was led by senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) and her 16 total points. She also racked up 11 total rebounds, securing her 64th career double-double in 74 career games played. Dating back to Jan. 16, 2013 against Keuka, Roser has strung together 17-straight games with a double-double. Junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) ranked second on the squad with 10 points while also contributing a team-leading six blocks to her credit.

In the first half alone, Wells committed 20 turnovers and shot a combined 8-for-27 (29.6%) from the floor. Two players recorded double-digit point totals for Alfred in the first half as Rachael Stedman and Harley Cleary each accumulated 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Saxons tallied 12 steals in the first half alone.

Alfred continued to apply pressure in the second half, shooting just over 42% from the field to continue to build their lead. The hosts went on to rack up a game-high 31 point lead with five seconds remaining in the contest, using an Amanda Off layup to take an 88-57 lead.

The Saxons were led by Stedman's 22 total points as she was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Cleary ranked second on the team with 18 points while Off led the team with three blocks in only 18 minutes of action.

Wells returns to action this Thursday, Nov. 21 as they host the Spartans of D'Youville College in their home opener at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing at 6:00 p.m.
