Roser’s 35 Points Power Women’s Basketball Past Cazenovia

AURORA, N.Y. – Senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) tied her career-high for points scored at home en route to an 81-67 victory over the Wildcats of Cazenovia College on Saturday within the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With their fifth-straight victory over Cazenovia dating back to Feb. 1, 2012, Wells improves to 9-7 overall on the season and to 4-3 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Cazenovia falls to 2-14 overall on the year and to 2-6 in league play.

Roser's 35 points at home are the most dating back to Dec. 2, 2013 against Hilbert where she scored the same amount versus the Hawks. The all-time Wells women's basketball record for points at home is 37 points, set by Sara Hutcheson '79 against Hamilton College. Roser's 39 points on the road against the SUNY Institute of Technology on Feb. 10, 2013 still stands as the all-time, single game scoring record.

Roser now has 74 career double-doubles in 85 career games played, Roser has racked up 55 career double-doubles against NEAC opponents since her first league game in a Wells uniform on Nov. 20, 2010. The senior captain added 12 rebounds, 11 foul shot conversions, three steals and three assists in this evening's tilt versus Cazenovia. Senior Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 11 points for Wells, adding a team-best six assists while pulling down seven rebounds.

Wells led by as many as 25 points in this evening's game, eventually building up their game-high lead with only 4:29 expired in the second half. Cazenovia tied the game at two apiece with only 17 seconds off of the clock in the first half, utilizing an Erin O'Malley jumper, but Wells quickly regained the lead with a Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) jumper with 18:46 remaining in regulation time.

A Roser foul shot created the 25 point advantage in the second half, but Cazenovia eventually went on to outscore the Express by a 43-39 spread in the second half. A three-point basket by Megan Plahanski with 6:02 left in regulation time cut the once-large lead to eight points, 67-59, but Wells quickly rebuilt a strong 16 point lead within the game's final two minutes.

Mary Salo led Cazenovia in point scoring and rebounding, tallying 13 points and securing nine rebounds off of the bench for the Wildcats. O'Malley ended the game with 12 points while Kimberly Vrigian and Rachael McDonough scored 10 points apiece. McDonough recorded a team-high three takeaways for the Wildcats.

Wells returns to action this Tuesday, Jan. 28 as they host the Mustangs from Morrisville State College in an 8:00 p.m. contest.
