Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

In only their fourth season as a modern day varsity program at Wells College, the women's basketball team capped off a historic season with a trip to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament in early March. Additionally, the Express secured their team's first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship after setting down both Gallaudet and Lancaster Bible to complete the upset. Led by Head Coach Mike O'Brien, the women's basketball team was only the second team in College history to appear at the national tournament.

NOTABLES

• DANCING WITH THE DEVILS: Making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Wells posted a loss to the Devils from FDU-Florham on Mar. 7 in the First Round. The host Devils went on to claim their school's first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship after completing an undefeated season (33-0).

• WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: Trailing by as many as 16 points through the game's first 7:25, the Express rebounded to capture their first-ever NEAC Championship by a 67-60 victory over the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College on Mar. 2. With the defeat, Lancaster Bible was saddled with their first conference loss in 26 games.

• WE ARE THE (NORTH DIVISION) CHAMPIONS, TOO!: The Express secured their second consecutive berth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason following a 76-68 victory over Keuka College on Feb. 22. The team's 10th-straight win, Wells was able to defeat the Storm for the first time in program history (1-11 all-time) and clinch the NEAC North Division with a record of 12-2.

• "WIN"-TER BREAK: After picking up a non-conference victory over SUNY Canton on Jan. 5, Wells rattled off 15 wins against only four losses in the New Year. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 22, the Express posted a program record winning streak of nine games and went on to win 11-of-12 games before falling in the NCAA Tournament.

• EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSER: Captain Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) wrapped up her career at Wells by setting career-high marks in points per game (22.2), field goal percentage (.480), steals (65) and minutes played (894). She also hauled in 12.7 rebounds per game and tied her career high for single season assists (69). Defensively, Roser posted 65 total blocks as the Express ranked 14th across all NCAA Division III schools in blocks per game (5.6) as a team.

• COLLECTING THE HARDWARE: Roser also hauled in numerous individual awards, including Women's DIII News Fourth Team All-American, D3Hoops.com All-American Honorable Mention, D3Hoops First Team East Region, NEAC Player of the Year, NEAC Championship Most Valuable Player, Wells College 2013-14 Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Team Most Valuable Player recognition. In addition, Roser picked up five of her 16 career NEAC Player of the Week awards as a senior.

• "DOUBLE" NO TROUBLE: Roser picked up her 82nd career double-double in the NEAC Championship game after scoring 21 points and hauling in 13 total rebounds versus Lancaster Bible. She wrapped up her four-year career only one double-double short of tying the NCAA Division III record of 83 set by Kathryn Stockbower of Swarthmore College. Additionally, Roser compiled a double-double streak in 23 consecutive games spanning her junior and senior seasons and fell only three double-doubles short of tying the NCAA record (26 - Christine Daniels, Norwich, Nov. 15, 2010-Feb. 22, 2011).

• THE 2,000/1,350 CLUB: Roser joined an exclusive club with her team's 55-46 victory over Morrisville State College on Feb. 19, scoring her 2,000th career point. At that time, Roser boasted 1,356 career rebounds to become only the third player in NCAA Division III history to score 2,000 points and collect at least 1,350 rebounds. Upon her career's conclusion, Roser's 1,418 rebounds rank her second all-time and she is the only player in NCAA Division III history to register at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in under 100 games.

• IT'S ACADEMIC: Senior captain Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) became the first-ever player in team history to win the Kathryn S. Maloney Senior Scholar-Athlete Award at the Athletics Awards Banquet. A Henry Wells Scholarship recipient, Ryan sported a cumulative grade-point average of 4.13. Having earned Dean's List honors across seven semesters during her tenure in Aurora, Ryan picked up North Eastern Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete across each of the prior three seasons.

• KNAPP-TIME: Junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.), in her first year with the Express, posted a strong season after shooting .389 from the floor and collecting an average of 6.1 rebounds per game. In addition, Knapp was a force for the Express near the net while registering 88 blocks across 28 games played.

• FIRST CLASS: The Express graduated four seniors in 2014 - Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.), Brittany White (Lewiston, N.Y.), Ryan and Roser. White, Ryan and Roser comprised the first four year group of seniors to graduate in the modern era of women's basketball at Wells while Hernandez was a transfer from Onondaga Community College in 2012.

• NATIONAL LEADERBOARD: Amongst the nation's NCAA Division III women's basketball programs in 2013-14, Wells ranked sixth in three-point field goal defense (.234 per game), 11th in offensive rebounds per game (19.0) and 14th in blocked shots per game (5.6). Roser ranked fourth nationally in double-doubles (21), 11th in rebounds per game (12.7), 20th in offensive rebounds per game (5.0) and 22nd in defensive rebounds per game (8.0). Knapp ranked 14th amongst all Division III women's basketball players with 3.14 blocked shots per game.
