Single Game Three-Point Record Broken At Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a program-record eight three-point baskets as a team, the Wells College women's basketball team posted an 84-55 loss to the Mustangs of Morrisville State College on Wednesday on the road. With the loss, Wells dips to 1-2 overall and to 0-1 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while the host Mustangs improve to 4-3 overall (1-0 NEAC).

With eight three-point field goals as a team against the Mustangs, Wells broke the previous team record of seven set against Penn St.-Abington on Jan. 19, 2013.

Junior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) led the Express with 19 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point range. Senior Cassie Smythe (Eden, N.Y.) ranked second on the team in point scoring, bombing four shots from distance (4-for-9) and scooping up four rebounds. Junior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) led the team with seven rebounds and also contributed with 10 points, rounding out the double-digit scorers for Wells.

Morrisville State led from start to finish but the Express kept the game close through the first five minutes. An Erkson three-point basket only 4:52 into the contest cut the hosts lead to 7-6, but 13-straight points by the Mustangs put the game out of reach near the midpoint of the first half. During that stretch, Morrisville State bombed three shots from beyond the arc to extend the advantage to 20-6.

In the second half, the hosts captured a 34-point lead following a Caitlynn Adams layup with 7:16 left in regulation time. Morrisville State ended up scoring a whopping 30 points off of Wells turnovers and outrebounded the Express by a 51-to-34 margin. Cumulatively, Morrisville State shot 41.5% (27-for-65) while Wells (14-for-51) recorded only six two-point field goals in 40 minutes of play.

The Mustangs were led by transfer student Alyssa Gratien, who shot 8-for-12 from the floor and bombed six three-point field goals in the contest to rack up 26 points. Freshmen Haley Kilmartin and Caitlin Duree scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, while the reigning NEAC Rookie of the Year, Jordan Anderson, scored 15 points.

The Express return to action Saturday, Dec. 6 as they host the Wildcats from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute in a 12 p.m. contest at the Farenthold Athletic Wing.
