Women's Basketball Sets Scoring Record vs. Penn College

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team scored a program record 93 points as they defeated Penn College by a 93-76 margin Saturday afternoon at the Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the victory, Wells improves to 7-12 overall on the year and to 6-8 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Penn College falls to 10-11 overall and to 9-7 in the conference.

By scoring 93 points in the game, Wells shattered the previous team high of 88 points scored on the road at SUNY Poly on Feb. 10, 2013. Additionally, the team's 23 total assists broke the previous mark of 22 assists, set twice against SUNY Cobleskill (Jan. 26, 2013, Dec. 7, 2013). Lastly, the team's 37 field goals tied the team record set last season, coincidentally against Penn College on Jan. 13, 2014.

Junior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) had a career day for the Express, scoring 28 points following an impressive 12-for-16 shooting performance from the floor. She also led the team with seven steals, ranked second all-time in single game history, and six assists while pouring home a team-leading three shots from beyond the arc.

Junior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) ranked second in point scoring, making all 10 of her foul shots on the afternoon. She becomes the second player in team history to have more than 10 makes without a single miss (Ashley Roser '14, 13-for-13, at SUNY Poly, Feb. 10, 2013). Senior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) and classmate Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapa'a, Hawaii) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Penn College captured a 4-2 lead following a Charese Bova layup, but the Express came roaring back with 27 of the game's next 38 points to take a commanding 29-15 lead following an Erkson jumper with 9:55 left in the opening stanza. Wells extended their largest first half lead in the final 1:08, scoring eight-straight points to take a 56-31 halftime lead.

With several starters out of the game, Penn College opened the second half on an 11-8 scoring run that was highlighted by nine points from Alicia Ross. A "three" by junior Jasmine Thomas (Las Vegas, Nev.) punctuated an impressive 10-4 run by Wells immediately following Ross's impressive scoring streak. For the remainder of the game, however, the Wildcats were able to outscore Wells by a 30-to-19 margin.

The Wildcats were led by Jamie Steer's 27 points as she scored her 1,000th career point with her team's first basket of the game Bova hauled in 13 rebound and posted 11 points of her own while Ross struck for 14 points.

Wells returns to action Sunday, Feb. 15 as they host the College of St. Elizabeth at 1 p.m.
