Cooper Paces Women's Basketball In 80-64 Victory

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team recorded an 80-64 non-conference victory over visiting Medaille College on Wednesday. Wells improves to 6-4 overall on the season while the Mavericks remain winless in seven games.

Junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.) led the way with 22 points, shooting 9-for-13 from the floor, while filling the stat sheet with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman Carley Ryan (Middleburgh, N.Y.) continued to impress for the Express, scoring 17 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Classmate Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.) poured home 11 total points for Wells, rounding out the double-digit scorers.

Senior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) posted five assists and three steals while classmate Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) assisted a team-leading six baskets and matched Achzet with three takeaways. Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hauled in eight rebounds for Wells.

Erkson also posted the 300th field goal of her career this evening against Medaille – she ranks second all-time in that statistic.

The Express opened up an 8-0 lead through the first 4:24 of play as Cooper scored four of her team's points during that stretch. A jumper by Maturine lifted the Express to a 24-9 lead in the first quarter, but a late three-point basket shrank the Wells lead to 24-12 as the horn sounded.

Wells tallied eight-straight points in the second quarter to establish a 20-point lead, 32-12, with 7:20 left in the first half. After Medaille cut its deficit to 34-21 with 4:02 left in the first half, Wells finished the half and began the third quarter with a 21-7 run to increase the lead. A three-point basket by Erkson and a layup by Ryan with 3:10 left in the third created a game-high 29-point lead for the Express.

The Mavericks were led by 23 points from Marceann Dunning. Rayann Call dialed in 18 points for Medaille and Kirstie Dlugosz was responsible for 10 of her team's 64 points. Taina Graham posted four steals while Dunning led her team with three assists.

Wells returns to action in exactly one month as it next plays Keuka College on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. in the Farenthold Athletic Wing.
