Women's Basketball Slowed By Lancaster Bible, 78-62

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Jasmine Thomas (Las Vegas, Nev.) led her team with 13 points as the Wells College women's basketball team was saddled with a 78-62 loss to the host Chargers from Lancaster Bible College on Friday. The Express fall to 10-6 and to 6-3 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference play while the South Division-leading Chargers move to 10-3 overall and to 7-1 within the league.

Thomas, who set a career-high with 12 points on Thursday against Penn St.-Berks, followed with 13 on Friday against the Chargers. She shot 3-for-6 from long range and dished out two assists and recorded a steal. Freshman Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.), senior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and classmate Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) all tallied 10 points apiece.

Achzet's performance was also notable as she tallied six rebounds for Wells, eclipsing 500 for her career. Since her first game on Nov. 15, 2012, Achzet has hauled in 502 rebounds across 95 games in an Express uniform. She concluded play on Friday ranked second in team history in career rebounding, games played (95) and minutes played (2,619).

Wells, who trailed by a six-point margin through the game's first 6:26, charged back to take an 18-15 lead after junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.) put back a fastbreak layup that capped a 9-0 Wells run with 2:56 to go in the first quarter. The extended run of Wells scoring was sparked by a layup from sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.), ultimately leading to a three-pointer from Thomas and a jumper by Erkson.

Lancaster Bible took the lead for good at the end of the first quarter, however, as a Katy Stover trey began a 17-4 run by the hosts that ultimately led to a 32-22 deficit with 5:26 remaining in the first half following an Aubrey Folger layup. Back-to-back baskets by Erkson and freshman Vielka Barber (Holly Springs, N.C.) shrank the deficit to six points, but the Chargers kept Wells at arm's length throughout the remainder of the half.

After a third quarter that saw Lancaster Bible score 28 points against Wells' 13, the Express reversed the tide in the fourth quarter and scored a game-high 21 fourth quarter points. In total, Wells bombed four three-point baskets in the final 10 minutes and the defense limited the Chargers to only points inside and free throws.

Folger and Stover scored 27 and 23 points, respectively, while Krissy Pennell dished out 13 assists to lead players from both teams.

Wells will travel to Morrisville State College this Thursday, Jan. 28, taking on the Mustangs in a key NEAC contest at 7 p.m.
