Late Comeback Downs Women's Basketball, 72-69

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team had three double-digit point scorers but a late surge by Morrisville State College sent the Express home with a 72-69 loss on Thursday. Wells dips to 10-7 overall and to 6-4 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while the host Mustangs move to 10-6 on the season and to 6-3 against league opponents.

Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a standout game for Wells, posting a team-leading 15 rebounds while scoring 14 points for her third double-double across the last four games played. Senior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) led her team in scoring with 15 points and also recorded a team-high three takeaways.

Freshman Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.) shot 6-for-13 from the floor, scoring 14 points and falling a single rebound shy of a double-double. Senior Jasmine Thomas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Vielka Barber (Holly Springs, N.C.) came off the bench for Wells, combining for 15 points in relief.

Strong offensive play by the Express built up a game-high 22 point lead (60-38) with only 12:57 remaining in regulation time as a Barber layup followed an Erkson trey late in the third quarter. In that stanza alone, Wells scored 21 points and utilized a dominant 10-0 run, highlighted by a three-point basket by freshman Carley Ryan (Middleburgh, N.Y.).

The Mustangs, however, pulled off a comeback across the game's final 12 minutes. Outscoring the Express by a commanding 34-to-9 margin during that span, Morrisville State took the lead for good in the game's final two minutes. After an Erkson jumper with 2:08 to go, Wells still led by a 68-62 margin, but the Express did not make another field goal throughout regulation time.

A 10-0 run by Morrisville State from that point on secured the victory as Jordan Anderson scored six of her team's points, including a sparkling four-for-four performance from the charity stripe. Wells shooters were 0-for-4 and committed two turnovers during that extended run by the victors.

Anderson was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line en route to a team-leading 22 point game for Morrisville State. Haley Kilmartin registered 17 points while Charlotte Walker and Allison Chase each posted 10 points off the bench.

Wells will travel to Cazenovia College this Sunday, Jan. 31 for a 3 p.m. contest.
