Century Mark Breached For Women's Basketball In NEAC Win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – For the first time in program history, the Wells College women's basketball team eclipsed the century mark in point scoring by setting down Penn College 104-60 on Saturday. Wells moves to 14-8 overall and to 10-5 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference – the Wildcats drop to 3-16 on the year and to 3-14 against conference foes.

With 104 points scored, Wells has set the single-game scoring record on three occasions this year. Most recently, the Express racked up 96 points against Wilson on Feb. 6 and, in the game prior, scored 95 against Cazenovia. The Express also combined to make 40 field goals (first all-time) and finished with 67 rebounds, the second-most in a single game for Wells.

Senior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) scored a team-leading 25 points, making five three-pointers, while tallying three assists. Junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.) racked up 23 points, chipping in with six rebounds, five assists and five takeaways. Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Vielka Barber (Holly Springs, N.C.) each posted double-doubles of 13 rebounds and 12 points.

Senior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) set a program record on Saturday by appearing in her 100th career game, the only player in school history to reach that milestone. In addition, she finished the game with exactly two points, reaching 700 career points – she remains the third-highest career scorer in the history of the program.

Freshman Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.) accumulated a career-high 14 rebounds for Wells.

The game was relatively close through the first 15 minutes of play as Wells led by only four only 23 seconds into the second quarter after a Danielle Mowery layup for the Wildcats. A quick 12-0 run sparked by back-to-back Cooper free throw makes, however, established a 32-16 lead with 5:36 left in the opening half.

In the second half of play, freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) bombed back-to-back three's to create a decisive 72-34 lead with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter. Another strong run by Wells, established after back-to-back layups from Barber, created a 39 point lead and inside play by Medovich and the Express created a 95-50 lead with 4:44 left in regulation time.

Alicia Ross led Penn College with 30 points. Ebani Lewis reeled in seven rebounds, leading the team, while Mowery dished out six assists.

Wells returns to action Sunday, Feb. 14 as it travels to the College of Saint Elizabeth for a 1 p.m. contest.
