Hot Shooting Lifts Women’s Basketball vs. SUNY Cobleskill

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball team shot a combined 34-for-63 (.540) on Friday as the Express defeated SUNY Cobleskill by a 91-51 margin at the Farenthold Athletic Wing. Wells moves to 16-8 overall on the season and to 12-5 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while SUNY Cobleskill drops to 9-15 (7-10 NEAC).

The team's shooting percentage from the floor (.540) set a program record, besting the previous high mark of .538 against Penn St.-Harrisburg on Dec. 5, 2010. Senior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) tied a career-high with five three-point baskets, tying a season-high mark with 25 points scored. She also picked up three assists and as many steals.

Junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.), who added a team-best nine rebounds of her own. She also filled the stat sheet with five steals and two assists, shooting 12-for-19 from the floor. Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 10 points, rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Express. Senior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) dished out a team-leading five assists.

With her team trailing by a 6-5 score near the midway point of the first quarter, Erkson bombed back-to-back treys to immediately create an 11-6 advantage for the Express. After outscoring the opposition by a 22-to-11 margin in the first quarter, SUNY Cobleskill rallied for 17 points in the second stanza to head into the locker room down by a 35-28 score. In the opening 20 minutes alone, Wells shot 50% (14-for-28) and was 4-for-5 from three-point range.

The Fighting Tigers cut the Wells lead to 37-34 as Morgan Bullis scored all six of her team's points to spark a rally, but Wells cut down the SUNY Cobleskill attempt with a 10-0 run that eventually grew to a dominant 19-2 stretch that was capped by a Carley Ryan (Middleburgh, N.Y.) fastbreak jumper with 12:50 left in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, Wells went on a dominant 20-0 scoring run that fell only one point shy of equaling the all-time record for consecutive points (21-0 vs. Cazenovia, Dec. 6, 2012). In that span, both Erkson and classmate Jasmine Thomas (Las Vegas, Nev.) connected from long distance. A trey from freshman Dallia Rorick (Van Etten, N.Y.) with 1:19 left in regulation time created a game-high 41 point lead.

Bullis led her team with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Shiann Coons scored 14 points after bombing four three-point baskets in the contest.

Wells will close out the regular season of action this Saturday, Feb. 20 as it hosts SUNY Poly at 3 p.m. on Senior Day. The Express will recognize the contributions of its four seniors, Erkson, Achzet, Thomas and Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) with a pre-game ceremony.
