Women's Basketball Edged By Medaille On The Road

The Wells College women's basketball team took to the road for the first time this season and fell by a 63-57 score at Medaille College on Thursday, Nov. 17 in Buffalo. Both teams have a 1-1 record after two games this season.

Ashida Cooper led Wells in scoring for the second game in a row. She totaled 21 points, and Shelby Medovich and Kamarie Maturine each scored 13.

Most of the game was played within a 10-point margin on the scoreboard. Wells held its only lead of the game with a 19-18 advantage on a layup by Carley Ryan to start the second quarter. Medaille outscored Wells 18-4 over the remainder of the second quarter and first two and a half minutes of the third quarter to build its largest lead at 36-23.

Wells trailed 46-39 to start the fourth quarter, but scored eight of the first 10 points of the quarter to pull within one. It was the closest that the Express came down the stretch as the Mavericks held off the rally and made 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the last 1:22 of the game.

Kamarie Maturine pulled down 21 rebounds, a career-best single-game total for Maturine and the first time that a Wells player has recorded a 20-rebound game since Ashley Roser achieved that mark multiple times in the 2012-13 season.

Wells returns to action Monday, Nov. 21 at D'Youville College.
