First-place SUNY Poly Hangs On For Win Over Women's Basketball

The Wells College women's basketball team pushed first-place SUNY Polytechnic Institute to the closing minute of the game before SUNY Poly came away with a 65-59 victory on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

The back-and-forth game was tied 16-16 after the first quarter, 28-28 at halftime, and 44-44 after the third quarter. Neither team held a double-digit lead in the contest. SUNY Poly's largest lead was eight points in fourth quarter. Wells led by four multiple times.

Ashida Cooper scored 17 points to lead Wells in scoring. She added nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Kamarie Maturine had 10 points and six rebounds for the Express.

Julia Smith scored nine points and Dallia Rorick had eight points for the Express.

Wells is 4-6 on the season and 3-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. SUNY Poly is 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC.

The Express continues conference play next weekend at Penn State-Abington and Bryn Athyn College. Saturday's game at Abington is a 1 p.m. start and Sunday's game at Bryn Athyn starts at noon.
