Women's Basketball Hangs Tough Against First-Place LBC

The Wells College women's basketball team stretched first-place Lancaster Bible College to the closing minutes, but came out on the short end of a 63-58 score in North Eastern Athletic Conference action on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter, and Wells held a 26-23 lead at halftime. The Express played its best stretch of the game in the third quarter and the lead grew to 12 points when Kamarie Maturine nailed a free throw to give Wells a 43-31 advantage with 2:16 left in the third. That capped a 17-5 run for Wells in the third.

Wells is 5-10 overall and 4-6 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Lancaster Bible improved to 12-5 overall and 11-1 in the NEAC. LBC is in first place in the NEAC South Division.

Lancaster Bible College answered with an 8-2 run to close the third and the Chargers outscored Wells 24-13 in the fourth quarter. The back-and-forth contest included seven ties and five lead changes.

Shelby Medovich led Wells with 19 points and she had nine rebounds. Ashida Cooper scored 16. Maturine had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Wells had 19 offensive rebounds in the game.

Wells has another NEAC home game Wednesday at 5 p.m. against area rival Keuka College. Fans are encouraged to wear red on Wells Wednesday. The women's basketball team will be wearing its red uniforms.
