Morrisville Pulls Away For Women's Basketball Victory

The Wells College women's basketball team fell by a score of 57-49 against visiting Morrisville State College on Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Schwartz Athletic Center in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game. Morrisville improved to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the NEAC. Wells is 7-11 on the year with a 6-7 conference record.

The game was close throughout the contest, as neither team held a double-digit lead at any point. Morrisville's largest lead was eight points, first established in the third quarter and then again with the victorious margin. Wells held a five-point lead in the first quarter.

Morrisville led by six at halftime, but Wells rallied in the third quarter and tied the game on two occasions, at 34-34 and 37-37, and went ahead 39-37 on a layup by Jenna Herd with a minute left in the third. Morrisville answered with a game-tying layup and made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to reclaim the lead.

Ashida Cooper scored 16 points for Wells and made four 3-pointers. Kamarie Maturine led Wells with 11 rebounds. Maturine and Carley Ryan scored seven points each.

Wells was 7-for-9 at the free-throw line.

The Express returns to action next weekend with road games against NEAC South Division opponents Gallaudet University and Wilson College. Wells faces Gallaudet on Saturday and Wilson on Sunday. Both games begin at noon.
