Undefeated Elmira Survives Scare From Wells

The Wells College women's basketball team lost a close game Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Elmira College defeated Wells 61-55, as the Soaring Eagles maintained their undefeated record with a 6-0 mark. Wells is 2-5 on the season.

Carley Ryan scored 21 points and Shelby Medovich scored 18 for the Express.

Wells took a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter, but Elmira held a 13-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes. The Soaring Eagles stretched the lead to nine points at halftime with a 30-21 advantage.

The Express dominated the third quarter by outscoring Elmira 24-12. Ryan scored 15 points in the third quarter and made two 3-point baskets in that stretch. Wells started the third quarter with a 13-2 run to turn its nine-point deficit into a two-point lead at 34-32. Wells led 45-42 after the third quarter.

Elmira closed out the victory by outscoring Wells 19-10 in the fourth quarter. Elmira scored nine points from the free-throw line in the fourth.

Kamarie Maturine and Miranda Mingen each had seven rebounds. Yanna Ososkalo and Maturine had four steals each for Wells, and Maturine had four blocked shots.

Wells returns to North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Dec. 7 with a 7 p.m. home game against Keuka College.
