Wells Women's Basketball Claims Close Road Win

The Wells College women's basketball team used a big shooting performance to key a 67-64 victory at Gallaudet University on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Gallaudet Field House in Washington, D.C.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the entire game. The Express posted its best shooting game of the season with a 52.1 percent field-goal percentage on 25-for-48 shooting. Wells was 13-for-18 at the free-throw line.

Wells improved to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Gallaudet is 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the NEAC.

Wells scored the first seven points of the game. Gallaudet closed out the first quarter on a 16-5 run and led 18-14 after the first.

The Bison scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Wells responded with a 14-3 run. The Express led 28-23 midway through the second quarter. Wells held a 34-32 lead at halftime.

In the fourth quarter, Wells broke a 53-53 tie on a basket by Shelby Medovich and added another by Jordan Jacobs. Kamarie Maturine made a spinning layup in the paint to put Wells ahead 65-62 with 33 seconds left. Gallaudet scored on a rebound to pull to within 65-64. Gallaudet fouled Medovich at the other end of the floor, who made two free throws. A 25-foot 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark for the Bison and Wells came away with a 67-64 victory.

Carley Ryan scored 22 points, Kamarie Maturine added 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and led Wells with 12 rebounds. Shelby Medovich had 12 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Jordan Jacobs added eight points.

Wells is back in action Sunday, Jan. 14 at Penn State Abington at 2 p.m.
