Strong Effort For Women's Basketball At Cortland

The Wells College women's basketball team went on the road and took on SUNY Cortland, the second-place team in the SUNY Athletic Conference. Wells held a second-half lead but eventually fell by a 69-54 score to the host Red Dragons on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Corey Gym in Cortland, N.Y.

Senior forward Kamarie Maturine scored 22 points, which matched her career-best scoring total established earlier this season at D'Youville College. Maturine had 12 of her 22 points in the second half and also had seven rebounds.

Wells got off to a fast start in the first quarter and held a four-point lead with a 7-3 advantage following back-to-back layups from Kamarie Maturine and a 3-pointer from Yanna Ososkalo. Cortland surged for the remainder of the first quarter and held a 12-7 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Wells pulled to within one point in the second quarter on two occasions but Cortland maintained its lead each time and stretched the advantage to nine points at halftime with a 34-25 lead.

The Express scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take a 36-34 lead. The go-ahead basket was a 3-pointer from Carley Ryan. The score was tied 36-36 and 38-38 before Cortland closed with an 11-2 run of its own and held a 49-40 lead after three quarters.

Cortland outscored Wells 20-14 in the fourth quarter to hold off the Express and claim a 15-point win.

Ryan scored nine points for the Express and Medovich added eight points. Cortland made 13-for-17 free-throw attempts and Wells was 2-for-2 at the line. Ryan had eight rebounds.

Wells is back in action Wednesday, Jan. 24 with a return to North Eastern Athletic Conference play at Penn College at 7 p.m.
