Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime Thriller

The Wells College women's basketball team played an exciting second half and rallied in the fourth quarter before falling 92-88 in overtime to Morrisville State College on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Prior to the game, Wells honored its three graduating seniors – Yanna Ososkalo, Dallia Rorick, and Kamarie Maturine – along with exchange student Hikari Kanja.

Carley Ryan scored a career-best 39 points. Shelby Medovich added 19 points and Ososkalo scored 17.

Wells held a 16-14 advantage after the opening quarter as Medovich scored eight points in the first. The game was tied 32-32 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Morrisville went on an 11-2 run to take a 50-41 lead. Carley Ryan nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the last minute of the quarter and Wells trailed by seven entering the fourth.

Morrisville held an eight-point lead with three minutes remaining, when the Express exploded on an 11-2 run to take the lead at 69-68 with 1:22 left. After the Mustangs made three free throws, Ososkalo answered with a 3-pointer and Wells led 72-71. Alexis Campbell made two more foul shots for Morrisville to put the Mustangs back in front. Wells worked the ball inside to Kamarie Maturine and she drew a foul. Maturine went 1-for-2 at the line on that trip and tied the game 73-73 with 14.4 seconds remaining. A pair of field-goal attempts for Morrisville in the closing seconds were off the mark.

Morrisville scored the first five points of overtime and led the rest of the way. Wells rallied to within one point on three occasions, but the Mustangs went 8-for-10 at the foul line in the overtime period and emerged with the victory.

Wells had its best 3-point shooting day of the season by making 13-of-29 attempts from behind the arc, a 44.8 percent success rate. It was the second game this season that Wells made at least 10 3-pointers.

Maturine led Wells with 14 rebounds. Ryan's 39-point game was a career-best scoring effort.

The Express hosts SUNY Poly on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. and concludes the regular season Saturday, Feb. 17 at SUNY Cobleskill.
