Close Women's Basketball Game Goes To Cobleskill

The Wells College women's basketball team was edged down the stretch in a back-and-forth game against SUNY Cobleskill. The Fighting Tigers came away with a 60-58 win over the Express in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday, Dec. 1.

Wells trailed by three after the opening quarter but the Express dominated in the second quarter. Wells outscored Cobleskill 20-11 in the quarter. Shelby Medovich had nine points in the quarter, which included a 17-4 run for Wells that gave the Express a 31-25 lead. Wells led 33-27 at halftime.

The game was tied seven times and there were seven lead changes.

Cobleskill held a five-point lead in the fourth quarter but Wells answered with a pair of free throws from Carley Ryan and a Diamonne Harris jumper to tie the game 54-54.

Harris later scored on a layup and converted the free throw to give Wells its final lead at 57-56 with under two minutes remaining. Three free throws over three separate trips by the Fighting Tigers put them back in front 59-57. Medovich went 1-for-2 at the line with 11 seconds left. Cobleskill added one more at the stripe in the closing seconds and sealed the victory.

Carley Ryan led Wells with 28 points and three assists, with two blocked shots. Harris scored 11 points and Medovich added 10 points with a team-leading nine rebounds.

Wells continues NEAC play Thursday, Dec. 6 with a 5 p.m. home game against Keuka College.
