SOARING EAGLES FLY BY EXPRESS

(Ithaca, N.Y.)─ The Wells College women's lacrosse team ran into a tough Elmira College squad as the Express fell to the Soaring Eagles 19-9 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.  The loss drops the Express to 2-3 on the season, while Elmira improves to 3-1.
 
Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North) led the Express with four goals, Courtney Grosser (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added two goals and one assists, Stefanie Miller (Barton, N.Y./Tioga) and Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif./Helix) chipped in with one goal and one assist each, while Anna Breard (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) added one goal to round the scoring for Wells. Liz Barclay (Laporte, Pa./Lincoln Acad.) took the loss in net with 16 saves.
 
Meghan Pass (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free) paced the Soaring Eagles with four goals and two assists, Lyndsey Mitchell (Arnold, Md./Arnold) added four goals and a game high five groundballs, while teammate Sarah Ware (Georgetown, Mass./Marquette) chipped in with three goals. Mary Kate Gellerman (Bethany Beach, De./Urbana) split the goaltending duties with LeAnna Presler (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia). Gellerman earned the win with one save, while Presler finished with five second half saves.
 
The Soaring Eagles struck first, scoring the game's first three goals. The Express battled back, Allen scored on a free-position shot and a goal by Grosser just a minute later pulled Wells to within one (3-2) with 17:19 left to play in the first half.
 
Elmira continued to pressure the Express, rattling off six straight goals to open a seven goal lead (9-2). The two teams traded goals over the final seven minutes as Elmira entered the break with a 12-5 lead.
 
Elmira opened the second half with three straight goals to take a commanding lead (15-5). However, the Express did not lay down, Allen buried a pass from Grosser, Miller scored on free-position shot and Bass added an unassisted goal, pulling the Express back to within seven (15-8).
 
Sensing a momentum shift, the Soaring Eagles answered the aggressiveness of Wells, scoring four straight goals to put the game out of reach.
 
Elmira held the advantage in shots on goal (35-15), groundballs (20-7), and caused turnovers (14-7).
 
The Express return action tomorrow when they take on Broome Community College at 1 p.m. at Binghamton High School in Binghamton, N.Y.
