Women’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker To Cazenovia, 13-10

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Needing a victory to secure a berth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs for the first time since 2011, the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 13-10 loss to the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Express conclude their season with an overall record of 6-9 while finishing with a 4-5 mark against league opponents. Cazenovia qualifies for the NEAC postseason for the fifth-straight season with an 8-7 overall record and a 5-4 mark against conference foes.

Cazenovia began play in the second half with a 7-6 lead, but the Express struck within the half's first three minutes to knot the score at seven apiece with 27:28 on the clock as sophomore Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at seven aside. However, Cazenovia went on a 4-0 scoring run, capped off with a Kim Vrigian goal to set the score at 11-7 with 19:24 remaining in the second half.

Wells scored three of the game's next five goals, but the four goal outburst proved too much to overcome. Ultimately, four different players scored three or more goals for Cazenovia – Alicia Priest, Abby Webster and Kim Vrigian each scored three times while Cassie Smock scored four goals for the Wildcats en route to the victory.

For the Express, sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) scored four goals, including a free position goal, while Fargnoli chipped in three total. Senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.), playing in what proved to be her final career game, struck for two goals and an assist while freshman Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) added one goal while causing four Cazenovia turnovers, a team-high.

Wells goalkeeper Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) kept her team in the contest, making six saves for the Express down the stretch in the second half but ultimately drawing the loss despite 10 total saves. Cazenovia keeper Christina Marra allowed 10 goals on 22 shots and earned the victory.
