Slow Start Dooms Women's Lacrosse vs. Alfred

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's lacrosse registered six second-half goals against Alfred University on Sunday, but the Saxons controlled the majority of play in the first half en route to a 15-9 victory over the Express. Wells remains winless in four games on the season while Alfred evens its overall record at 3-3 following the non-conference tilt.

Freshman Julia Smith (Guilderland, N.Y.) posted three points for Wells, leading the team with two goals and an assist, while freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.), senior Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) and classmate Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) each scored twice. Freshman Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.) scored once for the Express.

Defensively, senior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) tallied a team-best four caused turnovers while junior Ciara Tallman (Cortland, N.Y.) collected a team-high seven ground balls while causing three turnovers of her own.

In the first half alone, Wells committed 17 turnovers and failed on eight clears, allowing the Saxons to outscore the Express by a 10-to-3 margin in the opening half despite posting the same amount of ground balls (14). Alfred used a 6-0 scoring run to conclude the first half, scoring twice with the man-advantage, to possess the seven-point halftime lead.

The Express, however, settled down in the second half by scoring four of the first five goals of the half, capped off by back-to-back unassisted goals from Smith to shrink the hosts deficit to 11-7. Alfred would score to reestablish a five-goal lead, but Jordan and Gould would pot unassisted goals for Wells to shrink the Saxons lead to 12-9.

Down by only three goals, Wells ultimately saw the game slip away as three yellow cards led to two man-up goals for the Saxons in the final 1:08 of play.

Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made nine saves for Wells, drawing the loss after allowing 15 goals to Alfred. The Saxons were led by Shannon Gray and her six saves between the pipes.

Morgan Timmerman scored four goals and added an assist for Alfred, who also saw four goals from teammate Miranda Gilbert. The Saxons held advantages in shots taken (31-to-26), draw controls (15-to-10) and free-position goals (4-to-3).

The Express will host non-league SUNY Canton this Friday, Mar. 25 at 3 p.m. in Aurora.
