Women's Lacrosse Posts Home Loss vs. SUNY Canton

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) potted three goals to lead the Wells College women's lacrosse team in Friday's 15-5 loss to non-conference SUNY Canton. Wells (0-5) remains in search of its first victory of the year while the Kangaroos bounce to 4-3 overall on the season.

Joining Maloney on the scoresheet were freshmen Julia Smith (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Renee Bartosz (Blasdell, N.Y.). On the day, the Express held even with the Kangaroos with 23 ground balls, but the visitors outshot Wells by a 35-to-14 margin. Additionally, the Express committed a season-high 30 turnovers.

SUNY Canton opened the game on a 4-0 run that was slowed by a Smith free position shot with 15:09 remaining in the first half. Maloney scored the next two goals for Wells, but the Kangaroos used back-to-back goals from Lora Ardoin and Hannah Christiansen to open up an 8-3 lead over the Express with 2:24 left.

Wells would finish the half with back-to-back unassisted strikes from Bartosz and Maloney, but SUNY Canton would keep the Express off the scoreboard in the second half completely. Down the stretch, Robyn Carroll scored four of her team-leading seven goals as the Kangaroos posted seven total strikes in the final 30 minutes alone.

Express goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made a season-high 11 saves, falling to 0-5 overall on the season, while Becca Kieffer allowed five goals on 10 shots faced in the victory for SUNY Canton.

Wells will open North Eastern Athletic Conference play next Saturday, Apr. 2 as it hosts the Mustangs from Morrisville State College at 3 p.m. in Aurora.
