SUNY Poly Pulls Away In Second Half Against Women's Lacrosse

The Wells College women's lacrosse team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play Friday, March 31 with a road game at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, with the host SUNY Poly Wildcats coming away with a 14-7 victory. SUNY Poly remained undefeated on the season with a 4-0 overall record and 1-0 record in the NEAC. Wells is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

In the first half, Wells took a 2-1 lead with 23:31 after back-to-back goals from Mackenzie Maloney. SUNY Poly went ahead 5-2, but Wells scored three of the next four goals – two from Renee Bartosz and one from Julia Smith to pull to within one. SUNY Poly led 8-6 at halftime.

In the second half, SUNY Poly outscored the Express 6-1 and claimed the victory. SUNY Poly held a 16-3 advantage in draw controls in the game.

Maloney scored three goals for Wells and added an assist, Bartosz scored twice and had one assist. Smith had a goal and an assist. Jessica Burbank scored the second-half goal for Wells, and Savanah Connors had one assist. Goalkeeper Anna Bozeat made five saves.

Miranda Mingen led Wells with four ground balls and Jessica Burbank and Savanna Yerdon each forced two turnovers.

Wells returns to action Sunday with a road game in non-conference play against SUNY Canton at 1 p.m. The first home game of the year for the Express is Wednesday, April 5 at 4 p.m. against Elmira College.
