Women's Lacrosse Edged At Wesley

The Wells College women's lacrosse team rallied from a halftime deficit and took a lead late in the game, but eventually fell by a 19-18 score against Wesley College on Sunday, March 17 at Drass Field in Dover, Delaware. Wells is 1-1 on the season and Wesley improved to 5-1.

The Express led 18-17 with three minutes remaining, but a pair of goals in the final 2:22 gave Wesley a one-goal advantage that held up for the victory. Mackenzie Maloney picked up the draw control in the final nine seconds but was called for a foul. Wesley cleared the ball and ran out the clock.

Maloney had a big scoring day for the Express with 11 goals and two assists. That included four-straight goals in the final eight minutes of the game that turned a 17-14 disadvantage for the Express into an 18-17 lead before Wesley rallied.

Wells took an early 3-1 lead on a pair of goals by Savanah Connors, assisted by Maloney and Miranda Mingen, and the first goal of the game for Maloney. Wesley led 12-8 at halftime.

Connors finished with six goals and three assists, a career-high points game for her, and her second-straight game with six goals this season. Mingen had four assists and 10 draw controls. Renee Bartosz had a goal and two assists. Wells goalkeeper Anna Bozeat made 12 saves.

Maloney had eight draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers.

The Express will play its 2019 home opener Monday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. against Hartwick College at the Wells Turf Field. Wells begins North Eastern Athletic Conference play Saturday, March 30 at Cazenovia College.
