Women's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short At SUNY Poly

The Wells College women's lacrosse team had a spirited comeback but came up short in a 23-22 loss at SUNY Poly on Sunday, April 14. The Express trailed by five goals in each half, eventually tied it 22-22 with eight and a half minutes remaining, but the host Wildcats scored the winning goal in the final minute of the second half.

Wells is 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. SUNY Poly is 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the NEAC.

The Express fell behind 10-5 in the first half before closing the last six minutes on a 5-1 scoring run. Mackenzie Maloney and Miranda Mingen scored back-to-back goals. Then, while playing man-down, Renee Bartosz and Julia Smith scored 20 seconds apart. Savanah Connors added a free-position goal with 1:33 left in the half. Wells trailed 11-10 at the break.

The Wildcats led 19-14 with 19 minutes remaining and 21-18 with 12 minutes remaining. Three-straight goals from Maloney tied the score 21-21. SUNY Poly's Emily Somes scored to put the Wildcats back in front, but Mingen answered with 8:32 left to tie it 22-22. Kayla Prosinski scored the decisive goal with 32 seconds left to go, and the Wildcats won the ensuing draw control.

Maloney had seven goals and six assists for Wells. Connors had six goals, Renee Bartosz had four goals and three assists, and Mingen scored three goals. Julia Smith and Amanda Fastiggi had one goal each.

Maloney led Wells with eight draw controls. Mingen had eight ground balls and Maloney had seven. Anna Bozeat had three caused turnovers, five ground balls, and 15 saves.

Wells hosts Penn State Abington and Lancaster Bible College April 19 and 20. Friday's game against Abington starts at 1 p.m. and Saturday's game against Lancaster Bible is a 3 p.m. start.
