Cazenovia Rallies For Playoff OT Win In Women's Lacrosse

The Wells College women's lacrosse team lost 14-13 in overtime to Cazenovia College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference first-round playoff game on Tuesday, April 30 at the Wells Turf Field.

Wells College finished its season with an 8-6 overall record, which matched the program's best win total in a season, and qualified for the NEAC playoffs for the second year in a row. It was the first time since 2010 that Wells has hosted a playoff game. Cazenovia advanced to the semifinals where they will take on Morrisville State College on Saturday, May 4.

Cazenovia held an early lead in a closely-contested opening 15 minutes before Wells went on a four-goal run and held Cazenovia scoreless for the remainder of the opening half. Two goals from Julia Smith gave Wells a 7-6 lead. Mackenzie Maloney and Miranda Mingen added goals in the final 11 minutes of the half and the Express led 9-6 at halftime.

Chloe Marcus scored early in the second half but Cazenovia answered to pull within three. Maloney, Marcus, and Mingen added three goals in a row and Wells led 13-7 with 22:22 remaining in the second half.

Cazenovia held Wells scoreless for the remainder of the second half and scored six goals in a row. Cazenovia scored the game-tying goal with 1:05 left in the second half on a free-position shot from Breana Howe.

Wells had three shots in the first three minutes of overtime. Another draw control in the middle of the overtime period was won by Maloney and another shot was off the mark for the Express. Cazenovia cleared the ball and got a transition pass from Sydney Allen to Breana Howe for the game-winning goal at 4:26 of overtime.

Miranda Mingen led Wells with seven points on five goals and two assists. It was a single-game high in points for Mingen. Mackenzie Maloney, Julia Smith, and Chloe Marcus had two goals each. Amanda Fastiggi and Renee Bartosz also scored for the Express. Anna Bozeat made nine saves.
