WOMEN'S SOCCER GROUNDS EAGLES

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells women's soccer team came out aggressive, scoring two goals in the first half before adding two more in the second as they went on to defeat the College of St. Elizabeth 4-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Sunday afternoon in Aurora. Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) tallied two goals, Rebecca Furman (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman) added a goal and an assist, while Seyda Akyuz (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) chipped in with one goal to lead the Express. Catherine De La Cruz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) scored the lone goal for St. Elizabeth. With the victory the Express improve to 4-10-1 (4-4 NEAC), while the Eagles of St. Elizabeth fall to 4-12 (2-8 NEAC).
 
Juli Vibbard (Burlington Flats, N.Y./Edmeston) and Sarah Spezzano (Mumford, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) each tallied an assist on the day, while Megan Lawrence (Scipio Center, N.Y./Cayuga C.C.) and Rachel Mattraw (Chaumont, N.Y./Lyme Central) combined to earn the three save shutout victory in net.
 
The Express struck first, scoring just five minutes into the game. Vibbard threaded a pass through two defenders to the right side, hitting Furman in stride , as she blasted a shot to the far post, beating Eagles goaltender Sabrina Jarmolinksi (Lakewood, N.J./Howell) for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Express continued to operate in St. Elizabeth's offensive zone scoring just eight minutes later on Stone's first goal. With the ball dropping in on the left side of the 18, Stone beat the Eagle defenders to the ball and then made a quick cut back causing the defenders to overrun the play, leaving Stone wide open to bury her shot to the near post for a 2-0 lead.
 
Stone kept things rolling for the Express in the second half, scoring 1:35 into the start of play as the Wells lead ballooned to 3-0.
 
St. Elizabeth made things interesting in the 75th minute. De La Cruz received the ball at the top of the Express 18 and weaved her way through the defense and ripped a shot to the left side for a goal, pulling the Eagles to within two, 3-1.
 
Akyuz put the game away with four minutes to play, receiving a direct kick from Furman that she tipped in past Jarmolinkski, sealing the win.
 
For the game, the Express held the advantage in shots (27-9) and corners (5-1).
 
The Express return to action next against Keuka College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Aurora.
