POTSDAM SHUTS OUT EXPRESS IN SEASON OPENER

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's soccer team (0-1) fell in their season opener 4-0 to the visiting SUNY Potsdam Bears (1-0) on Thursday afternoon in Aurora. Potsdam posted all four scores in the first half en route to the victory. Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) paced the Bears with two tallies, while Katrina Rowland (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) earned the victory in net. Megan Lawrence (Scipio Center, N.Y./Cayuga C.C.) finished with 10 saves in the loss for the Express.

McKaylah Philo (Northville, N.Y./Northville) opened the scoring for the Bears, sliding a shot past Lawrence less than two minutes into play. Potsdam extended their lead on two straight unassisted goals by Johnson and then finished the first half on a goal by Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence) to take a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the break.

The two teams played to a stale mate in the second half as neither team would be able to generate any significant offensive chances.

The Express return to action on Saturday, September 3, when they travel to take on Paul Smiths College at 1:00 pm in Paul Smiths, N.Y.
