Express Drop OT Heartbreaker To Mountaineers

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal, but the Wells College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at the hands of Southern Vermont College in the first overtime period. With the loss, the Express have lost four straight games and fall to 1-5 overall following the non-conference game. The Mountaineers improve to 5-1 overall on the season.

The Express have not collected an overtime win dating back to Oct. 26, 2002 when they posted a 2-1 overtime victory against Chatham University. Their last victory in extra time at home came on Oct. 12, 2002, a 2-1 victory against Chatham. Since their last overtime win, the Express are 0-6-8 overall in 14 overtime games.

Freshman forward Jess Magee scored her first collegiate goal to win the game 5:37 into the first overtime period. With the offense entrenched in the Wells College defensive zone, a shot by a Mountaineer rang off the crossbar behind Express goaltender Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.). The ensuing rebound spilled out to the top of the box where it was forced home by a crashing Magee for the game-winning goal.

Kaitlyn Forant scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season at 33:42 of the first period, granting the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead. Erin Student sent a ball into the goal box directly to the foot of Forant. A quick flick of the foot sent the ball just inside the left post and just out of the grasp of Roser for the first goal of the game.

Raczynski scored her first collegiate goal with only 9:40 remaining in regulation time, tying the game at one goal apiece. A corner kick by freshman Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was sent into the mix where it deflected off several bodies in the scrum. Raczynski came up with the ball and forced it past Mountaineer goaltender Catrina Cecchini for the game-tying goal.

Roser (1-5) collects her fourth straight loss in goal for the Express, despite making seven saves on the afternoon. Cecchini (3-0) remains undefeated on the season, turning aside five of six shots on goal for the Mountaineers.

The women's soccer team returns to action Thursday, Sept. 20 as they travel to play the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
