Stone, Tucker Elevate Women’s Soccer Over Kangaroos

AURORA, N.Y. – Midfielder Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) and forward Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.) scored for the Wells College women's soccer team en route to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Field. With the victory, the Express improve to 3-10 overall on the year while the Kangaroos fall below .500 with their seventh defeat (6-7).

Stone scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal only 1:37 into the second half, lifting the Express to what was then a 2-0 advantage. Midfielder Chelsey Martinelli (Chichester, N.H.) one touched a pass forward to Tucker, streaking up the middle. Tucker quickly sent the past forward to Stone, who remained onside while beating the Kangaroo defense to create a breakaway. Stone forced the ball past the diving Kangaroo goalkeeper, Laura Pratt, for the strike.

Tucker opened the scoring at 16:28 of the first half, placing the Express in front early. Stone fired a blast on goal that was knocked down by Pratt in the goal crease. Not giving up on the play, Tucker elevated a shot near the left post for her third goal of the season.

Franchesca Trombley converted her second goal of the season at 74:59 of the second half, halving the Express advantage to 2-1. Trombley initially rang the crossbar with a shot but followed up her effort by colliding with Express netminder Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) in the goalmouth. The goal was ruled good upon the collision as the ball had crossed the plane of the net, granting the Kangaroos their first strike of the contest.

Roser (3-10) earned her third victory of the year, turning aside 16-of-17 shots on goal that she faced. Pratt (3-6) allowed two goals on 15 shots to collect her sixth loss on the year. SUNY Canton outshot the Express by a collective 31-23 margin, but Wells placed 18 of their shots on goal as opposed to the Kangaroos' 16 shots on net.

The Express return to action Tuesday, Oct. 9 as they face-off against The College at Brockport in a 4:00 p.m. tilt.
