Late Goals Sink Women’s Soccer, Elevate Cazenovia To 4-2 Victory

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Despite possessing a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute, the Wells College women's soccer team allowed three unanswered goals to post a 4-2 loss to the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Express fall to 6-12 overall and to 4-7 against North Eastern Athletic Conference foes. The Wildcats snapped a six game losing streak with their ninth victory of the year (9-8-1, 5-7 NEAC).

Megan McDermott scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 78:46 of the second half, elevating the Wildcats to a 3-2 lead. Emily Graham scored unassisted less than two minutes later to further increase the lead to 4-2.

Nateasha Williams' goal, only 2:30 into the game, lifted the Wildcats to an early one goal lead. The Express, however, answered with the game's next two goals. Midfielder Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored her second goal in as many games with 1:50 remaining in the first half while midfielder Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.) recorded her team-best seventh goal of the year at 62:06 of the game. Kerry MacHugh scored the game's tying goal at 67:50 to spark her team to the eventual victory.

Both goaltenders were tested in the game as Express goalkeeper Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) made 11 saves on 15 shots to draw the loss. Breanne Warner also posted double-digit save totals, turning aside 12-of-14 shots on goal that she faced.

The Express will honor their three graduating senior student-athletes, defenseman Lauren Dunster (Auburn, N.Y.), forward Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.) and defenseman Kelly Cornwell (Caledonia, N.Y.), this Saturday, Oct. 27 prior to the 12:00 p.m. contest against SUNY Cobleskill. As part of Friends and Family Weekend, Wells College will be hosting a pre-game barbecue at the athletic fields for all to enjoy.
