Women’s Soccer Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker To Keuka, 2-1

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Despite a game-tying goal by sophomore Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) in the game's 65th minute, the Wells College women's soccer team was saddled with a 2-1 double overtime loss against the Storm of Keuka College Wednesday evening under the lights. With the loss, the Express fall to 3-10 overall on the year and to 3-3 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The win boosts the host Storm to a 6-3-1 overall record alongside a 5-2 mark in league play.

With the game tied at one apiece, a corner kick by Keuka was headed home by Alexis Pomerville in the 105th minute to grant the hosts a 2-1 victory in the second overtime stanza. Up to that point, Keuka was outshooting the Express by a 41-to-7 margin as the decisive 42nd shot was able to crack the formidable Wells defense.

Kaitlyn Talbot led off the scoring for both teams, elevating Keuka to a 1-0 lead at 37:28 of the first half. Despite the initial save by Wells goalkeeper Olivia Baum (Summerville, S.C.), the ensuing scrum in the goal crease was won by Keuka's Talbot to place the Storm up by one goal. Raczynski forced home the equalizer at 65:47, knotting the score at one apiece after receiving a feed from sophomore Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.)

Keuka charged out of the gate with 19 shots in the first half alone, limiting Wells to only three shots in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Keuka only fired 13 shots while combining for 10 total shots in both overtime periods. The Storm also possessed a 16-to-3 edge on corner kicks.

Baum drew the loss, turning aside a career-high 21 shots on goal that she faced. Her 21 save performance places her within the top-20 individual goalkeeping performances of all time – only three Wells goalkeepers since 1996 have halted at least as many shots as Baum, including Savanna Duh (23 saves vs. Alfred, 10/23/09), Ashley Roser '14 (21 saves vs. Alfred, 09/30/12) and Claire Petersen '09 (21 vs. Cobleskill St., 11/08/08).

Wells returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 12 as they host the Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology in a 2:00 p.m. contest at the North Athletic Field.
