Maloney Paces Offense In 9-1 Victory Over St. Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Freshman Mackenzie Maloney (Huntington Station, N.Y.) recorded her first career hat trick for the Wells College women's soccer team en route to its 9-1 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday. Wells moves to 4-9 overall and to 3-3 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while the Eagles drop to 0-10 overall, remaining winless in six conference matches.

Maloney recorded three goals and one assist for seven points (3-1=7), becoming the first Wells player to record a hat trick since teammate Yanna Ososkalo (Lyme, N.Y.) on Sept. 14, 2014 against Wilson. Junior Amber Welsh (Cortland, N.Y.) added two goals of her own while senior Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.), Ososkalo and freshman Jordan Lidell (Pitcher, N.Y.) each scored a goal while adding an assist.

Welsh opened the scoring only 5:54 into regulation time, scoring an unassisted goal before Maloney potted her first of the game at 11:21. Only 2:02 later, Maloney struck again to elevate Wells to a 3-0 lead through the first 13:23. Welsh and Ososkalo scored next for Wells, lifting the Express to a 5-0 lead through the opening 24:15.

Only 22 seconds after Ososkalo's goal, Lidell scored the first goal of her young career at 24:37 to add insurance for the Express. The host Eagles, however, were able to score with only 1:48 on the clock in the first half as Chioma Emeana tapped home a pass from Roxanna Gomez-Luna to give the Eagles some momentum entering halftime.

The second half, however, was more of the same as Maloney completed the hat trick at 72:36 to give her team a 7-1 lead. Senior Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) added her first goal of the year at 82:43 and Hiltbrand added an unassisted goal with 21 ticks left on the scoreboard to conclude the scoring for Wells.

Wells outshot St. Elizabeth by a 29-to-5 margin and also picked up eight corner kicks, limiting the hosts to only three set plays.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayleigh Hurley (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) moved to 3-0 in her young career for Wells, allowing one goal on two shots to remain undefeated. Sophomore Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) relieved Hurley at 60:26 and did not face a shot from the Eagles. St. Elizabeth's Mariah Lavornia allowed nine goals on 20 shots faced, making 11 saves in the complete game loss.

Wells will face-off against Penn College this Sunday, Oct. 11 in an 11 a.m. road contest.
