Women's Soccer Captures Key NEAC Victory Over Penn College

The Wells College women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and went on to win 2-1 over Penn College on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells handed Penn College its first North Eastern Athletic Conference loss of the season. Wells has won five matches in a row overall and stands at 8-3-0 on the season with a 5-2-0 record in the NEAC. Penn College is 7-5-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference.

Penn College held the early advantage in possession over the first 10 minutes of the match, but Wells took control of the game in the first half. The Express went ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute after they connected several passes building up through the midfield. Madison Beriman eventually slotted a pass through to Emma Booth who turned and fired a high shot from near the penalty spot past Penn College goalkeeper Colleen Bowes. Booth has 12 goals on the season, and Beriman has three assists.

Wells kept the pressure on and extended the lead 10 minutes later when Mackenzie Maloney took a pass on the left side of the box, beat a defender, and then drew the keeper out and shot it inside the right post for a 2-0 Wells lead. It was the ninth goal of the year for Maloney.

Later in the half, Mackenzie Maloney had another scoring opportunity and her hard shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Penn College pulled to within one in the second half with a goal during a goalmouth scramble in the 51st minute. Tiffany Hartman finished the play at the goal line on an assist from Hailee Hartman.

Wells had another shot denied by the crossbar in the second half, after an initial shot from Booth forced a diving save from Bowes, the rebound came to Yanna Ososkalo who fired it off the crossbar.

A late shot from Penn College missed wide of the right post with a minute and a half left.

Wells finished the game with an 18-16 advantage in shots, including an 11-7 edge in the second half. Wells goalkeeper Karlie Maloney made six saves, and Bowes had eight saves for the Wildcats.

Wells returns to action Sunday, Oct. 9 at home against The College of St. Elizabeth at noon.
