Scoreless Draw For Women's Soccer Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

The Wells College women's soccer team outshot visiting Bryn Athyn College by a 22-16 margin but neither team scored in a 0-0 tie on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the Wells Turf Field. It was the first tie of the season for Wells and kept the Express in contention for a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff bid.

It was the first tie of any kind for the Wells women's soccer team in more than six years, dating back to a 1-1 result at Pine Manor College on Sept. 18, 2010; and the first scoreless draw since Nov. 1, 2008 at Penn State-Berks.

Wells had a strong scoring opportunity in the first half when Yanna Ososkalo ripped a right-foot shot from the top of the penalty area that was denied by the crossbar in the 24th minute.

In the closing minutes of the second half, Amber Welsh beat an offside trap and had a break on goal, but the Bryn Athyn keeper came off the line to cut the angle and stop the shot. Welsh had an opportunity on the rebound but the shot went wide.

Goalkeeper Karlie Maloney made 11 saves in the match for her first full shutout of the year. Two of the saves were sharp stops in overtime on good efforts from inside the penalty area by Rose Glass of Bryn Athyn.

Prior to the match, four Wells seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program. The quartet of Arianna Harmon, Amelia Thomas, Amber Welsh, and Ciara Tallman were celebrated. The Wells women's soccer team has increased its win total each of the last four years, from four wins in 2013, to five in 2014, seven in 2015, and nine so far this season.

Wells is 9-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the NEAC, currently seventh in the conference standings, one point ahead of eighth-place Cazenovia. Cazenovia has played one fewer game than Wells. The Express wraps up its regular season Saturday, Oct. 29 at Morrisville State College at 1 p.m.
