Penn College Holds Off Wells Women's Soccer

The Wells College women's soccer team played tough against one of the conference's top teams and fell by a 5-2 score to Penn College on Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Wells Turf Field. The Express scored once in each half against the visiting Wildcats.

Penn College is 8-2-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference this year with an 11-5-0 overall record. Wells is 3-12-0 overall and 2-8-0 in the NEAC.

Penn College took the lead 20 minutes into the contest but Wells answered to tie four minutes later. Madison Beriman stole a pass in the defensive midfield for Penn College and went in on a breakaway. Beriman dribbled around the goalkeeper and slid a shot in at the right post for the game-tying goal. It was the second goal of the year for Beriman.

Penn College led 2-1 at halftime and stretched the lead to 3-1 six minutes into the second half.

Wells earned a penalty kick on a foul inside the penalty area, but the shot was saved by the Penn College goalkeeper. The Wildcats' lead grew to 4-1 in the 72nd minute. Wells answered with a goal from Mackenzie Maloney. Tayler Nichols played a long pass ahead and Maloney controlled at the edge of the area and slotted it past the oncoming keeper.

It was the team-leading eighth goal of the year for Maloney and the first assist of the year for Nichols.

Penn College added another goal late to account for the 5-2 final.

Wells goalkeeper Kayleigh Hurley made 10 saves.

Wells wraps up its season Saturday, Oct. 27 with a home game against SUNY Cobleskill at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Express.
