Women's Swimming Defeats Gallaudet, Alfred State

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Wells College women's swimming team posted victories over Gallaudet University and Alfred State College Saturday afternoon at SUNY Cobleskill. The Express defeated Gallaudet by a 143-108 margin and Alfred State for the second time in 2014 (155-27), but fell to the host Fighting Tigers by a 171-99 score. Wells' overall record in head-to-head matches evens at 4-4 following the meet.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) had another outstanding meet for the Express, capturing three first place finishes. Her first place time in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:33.91) qualifies as the third-fastest time in program history – no other swimmer has cracked the programs' top-10 fastest times dating back to the 2009 season, a fifth place time.

She also turned in first place times in the 200 Yard Backstroke (2:37.42) and the 400 Yard Individual Medley (5:33.42). Her individual medley time placed her eighth all-time in the event, eclipsing the time of 5:38.93 set by Hallie Hanson '14 last season which, at the time, was the fastest time in six years.

Senior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.) posted three second place finishes, completing the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:02.41), 200 Yard Freestyle (2:17.52) and the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:11.29) on the afternoon. Sophomore Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.) captured a first place finish in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:56.84) and also turned in a second place 100 Yard Breaststroke time of 1:22.15.

Senior captain Stephanie Todd (Norwich, N.Y.) captured an additional first place finish for Wells in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 13:13.01. The 200 Yard Medley foursome of sophomore Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.), Ross-Detro, Schwend and Touron also netted a top finish with a time of 2:08.72.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Jan. 10 as they travel to Buffalo State College for a 1 p.m. meet after the New Year.
