Women's Swimming Competes at NEAC Championships

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Wells College women's swimming program opened the first day at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships with several strong performances. The Express rank fourth amongst six teams following the conclusion of the first day on Friday, racking up 108 points. The host Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill lead the field with 182 total points.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) had an outstanding time of 2:28.69 in the 200 Yard Individual Medley preliminaries, placing fifth all-time in the event in team history. Her time was the fastest by any Wells swimmer since Gabby Spencer set the top time of 2:25.46 in the 2012 season. Sophomore Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.) trailed Schwend by only 4.12 seconds, placing fifth while earning 10 points.

Junior Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.) had a strong performance for the Express in the 500 Yard Freestyle, placing second with a time of 5:56.27 to earn 13 points for her team. Senior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.) and sophomore Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 5:57.95 and 6:06.49. Freshman Samantha Hall (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) was the lone Wells swimmer to set a season-high time in the event, touching the wall in 6:30.36. Senior Stephanie Todd (Norwich, N.Y.) set a personal best time in the 500 Yard Freestyle wth a time of 6:19.17.

The foursome of Flint, Daniels, Schwend and Touron turned in a third place time of 1:53.50 in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, earning 24 points for Wells in the 11 team field.

Wells will compete in the second day of the NEAC Championships Saturday, Feb. 14 on the campus of SUNY Cobleskill. The preliminary races begin at 10 a.m. with the finals starting promptly at 6 p.m.
