Eleven "First's" Lead Women's Swimming Past Lions

AURORA, N.Y. – Members of the Wells College women's swimming team combined for a dominant 11 first-place finishes Tuesday evening, powering the team to a 135-105 road victory over Penn St.-Altoona. The Express, winners of two-straight meets, move to 3-9 overall on the season while the Lions drop to 2-7 on the year.

Senior Quinn Griswold (Alpine, N.Y.) was a part of four first-place finishes for Wells, completing the 50 and 100 Yard Backstroke events in 33.25 and 1:10.97, respectively. She later added a top finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:05.09), helping to earn her team an impressive 38 points in the meet.

Freshman Courtney Cloutier (West Springfield, Mass.) posted three first-place finishes and a silver finish for the Express, collecting her first victory of the day with a time of 2:13.74 in the 200 Yard Freestyle. She went on to record a 200 Yard Individual Medley victory (2:27.66) and then later posted a 50 Yard Butterfly time of 32.16, finishing less than a second behind her Wells teammate.

Junior Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.) touched the wall in 38.73 while competing in the 50 Yard Breaststroke, capturing first out of the five entrants. Her 100 Yard Backstroke time of 1:25.10 also led the field, eclipsing her Lions counterpart by .98 seconds. She also combined with senior Melanie Canales (Burlington, Mass.), sophomore Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) and senior Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.) for a second-place time in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (2:01.24).

Schwend rounded out the remaining top performances on the day for the Express as she notched top finishes in the 50 Yard Butterfly (31.75) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:10.84).

The foursome of Griswold, Ross-Detro, Schwend and Cloutier opened the evening with a first-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, completing the event in 2:10.96 to finish just under three seconds ahead of the next-best finisher.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Jan. 23 as it travels to William Smith to take on the host Herons and the Wildcats from Cazenovia College at 1 p.m.
