800 Yard Freestyle Relay Record Set At NEAC Championships

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's swimming program set another program record at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Cazenovia College. Wells remains in second place out of the five teams competing, having earned 257 points heading into the third and final day of competition on Sunday.

Cazenovia remains firmly in the lead with 454 points while SUNY Cobleskill is third, trailing Wells by only 17 points. Cedar Crest is fourth with 205 points while Gallaudet rounds out the five-team field with 184 points through 26 events. Through two days of competition, Wells has posted eight new times in the All-Wells Top 10 program records and has set three program records.

Senior Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.), senior Quinn Griswold (Alpine, N.Y.), sophomore Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) and freshman Courtney Cloutier (West Springfield, Mass.) earned second place in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, earning 26 points with a program record time of 8:47.89 to shatter the previous record of 8:56.37 set in 2013 at the NEAC Championships.

Wells opened the day with a strong performance in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, posting a time of 2:03.84 in the preliminary round with the foursome of Griswold, junior Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.), Schwend and Cloutier. They later earned fourth place in the finals, collecting 22 points after recording a time of 2:04.23.

Cloutier added a first place finish for Wells in the 400 Yard Individual Medley, using a career-low time of 5:03.94 to record the second-fastest time in program history. She trails only Jennifer Ingold's time of 4:57.33, set at the New York State Championships on Feb. 21, 1992.

Schwend took second in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:07.29) before Daniels posted the 10th-fastest 200 Yard Freestyle (2:12.05) in program history, finishing third against the field. Ross-Detro took fourth in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:17.44) and Griswold followed with a fourth place finish of her own in the 100 Yard Backstroke finals (1:07.25), posting the third-fastest time in program history in preliminaries (1:07.72) as well.

Wells will look to finish strong in the third and final day of competition at the NEAC Championships Sunday morning at 10 a.m. – the finals will begin at 4:45 p.m. on the campus of Cazenovia College.
